COLLECTION METHODOLOGY

Statistics are derived from ACT Policing’s central Police Realtime Online Management Information System (PROMIS) – the Australian Federal Police’s central recording system for all crime, incidents and offences that are reported to police.

SCOPE AND COVERAGE

Offences reported to and recorded by ACT Policing. Coverage excludes rural locations (monthly data includes offences for all locations).

DEFINITION OF FAMILY AND DOMESTIC VIOLENCE

Family violence is defined as behaviour directed toward a family member that includes:
    • physical violence;
    • sexual violence/abuse;
    • emotional/psychological abuse;
    • unreasonable economic abuse;
    • threatening behaviour;
    • coercion/behaviour that controls or dominates or causes fear for safety or well-being (including another person);
    • any behaviour which causes a child to hear/witness/expose any above listed behaviours or effects;
    • sexual coercion;
    • property damage;
    • harming an animal;
    • stalking; and
    • deprivation of liberty.

DEFINITION OF SEXUAL VIOLENCE

Sexual assault - Physical contact, or intent of contact, of a sexual nature directed toward another person where that person does not give consent, gives consent as a result of intimidation or deception, or consent is proscribed (i.e. the person is legally deemed incapable of giving consent because of age, temporary/permanent (mental) incapacity or there is a familial relationship).
